FUSION / KATONG
FUSION / KATONG
Can the food court be about certain experiences, rather than just another convenient outlet to get a meal? Situated in the heart of Katong, a nostalgic fusion takes Fusion / Katong back to its roots as a Peranakan enclave in the early 20th century. The data-driven design devises unique individual nooks, combining the elegance of retro-materiality and contemporary style with an intimate dining experience.

DATA-DRIVEN USER RESEARCH
Garnering over 250 respondents, our team designed a survey to find out what our diners would prefer when it comes to dining in a food court. The information gathered was used to create data visualisations to better present our findings to the clients.
ART - RETRO
To create the environment for an intimate dining experience, large parcels of space are split up into "nooks" and corners which allow diners to experience the space as small cafes, with varying, interesting themes rather than a large, central dining hall. Elements of greens, as well as the heavy use of accent lighting are intended to elevate the space which is otherwise underground. To create visual interest as well as comfort, planters are scattered around the plan.
MOODBOARDS, MATERIALS AND FINISHES
Materiality heavily influences the textures, the perception as well as the experience of the space. Smooth, cold surfaces of terrazo line countertops to give an easily maintained and smooth surface. Brushed metal accent trims give a cold touch, as well as elevate the appearance of surface edges. Textured tiles and bricks are used to generate texture and complement the colours of the dining space while diffused light trims along the ground indicate the central circulation where all dining revolves around.
Polycarbonate panels warp and diffuse light in a magical way.
Fluted glass/polycarbonate panels are used to screen nooks from one another. These panels diffuse light in an interesting blur. Concrete vent blocks and metallic grilles give the space a retro touch.
Granolithic finishes as well as rattan furniture give texture and contrast to the smooth tiles and terrazzo surfaces.
FURNITURE
A varied mix of furniture gives a casual, playful vibe. It removes repetitiveness and the mundane, which gives diners the perception of multiple choices, dynamicity and exploration.
VR WALKTHROUGH
We designed a Virtual Reality walkthrough for our clients to experience the space in real-time, to experience the spatial and material qualities of the space.
